Things that make the staff smile #3

August 26, 2010

I was privileged to have two wonderful “Moms” in my courses this term who each suffered terrible family problems that resulted in each of them receiving failing grades at Mid-Term.

Because of the University’s policy encouraging instructors to reach out to our students, I was able to build real teams with these fine students convincing them that they were not alone, we were in this together and we would get through this time together.

Using the flexibility of their working online at any time, my communications with these students, encouragement, and support, they each pulled themselves up to “A”s by the final posting of grades. They truly understand and value the advantages of online courses.

I picture them at their kitchens tables: it’s 11pm, the family is finally in bed, the supper dishes are piled in the sink, the washing machine is running, and they are settling in to do their studies at the only quiet time of their day. They are tired, but determined, and we are there to support, to encourage, to be the cheerleader, the Mother, the disciplinarian, the friend in the dark: they know they are not alone. Even when the feeling of isolation may be overwhelming, they know we are there and they are not alone.

Warmest regards,

Dr. Pamela Parkinson

What a great story! As a stay at home mother and wife of a disabled veterans, I can totally relate to those students. I am so happy that they were able to pull through with the encouragement from Herzing’s instructors and personnel. It really makes me feel even more capable for success now and in the future.

Congratulations to those students and thanks to those at Herzing who were there cheering them on with encouragement to make it through. I love this school!

The student you described in your posting is exactly right. That is me. You even pinned the washing machine down! I am determined and because Herzing was there to help me, I will be a success story!!
