Among my many nerdy qualities is the love of proverbs.  Usually short and sweet, they speak with insight and depth.  They get you thinking broadly about the world around you.  Here is an old English proverb:

A smooth sea never made a skillful mariner

First this makes me think of “Deadliest Catch”, the TV show about Alaskan crabbers who battle the cold arctic seas to bring in boatloads of crustacean goodness.  I secretly love this show.  It also tells us that life is supposed to be full of challenges.  Easy isn’t a reality.  Here is a Chinese proverb:

The journey is the reward

How true is this?  Whether we are talking about education, raising a family or taking care of a pet, the journey, the everyday smiles are what make it worthwhile. Here is one of Japanese origin:

Fall seven times and stand up eight

In other words, don’t be afraid to stand up to adversity.  If life knocks you down, get back up and face it head on.  This one is of American origin:

You can’t steal second base with your foot on first

Take CHANCES and RISKS even if you are afraid of failure (striking out) you can’t move forward without taking some sort of risk.  And lastly, from the French we have:

Life is half spent before one knows what life is

How many times has each of us thought about how fast time goes by?  How years seem to come and go before our eyes.  When we begin to realize the gift we’ve been given through our crazy, busy lives and when we begin to appreciate and enjoy it a good portion of it has passed.  We all need to take some time to enjoy each and every day.

So, on the subject of proverbs, what is your favorite?  Please share it with us on Facebook at!/herzingonline

A heart that loves is always young (Greek)
