Heart and Hope Conference – Orlando Nurses Participate

June 1, 2010

On Saturday Feb 20, 2010, the third semester nursing students had the opportunity to participate in the 4th annual Heart and Hope Statewide Family Conference held at Southwest Middle School in Orlando. The conference is sponsored by the Family Network on Disabilities. The students alternated between attending parent training, skill-building and support sessions, and providing child care for disabled children and their siblings.

Associate Professor Terri Kyle, MSN, ARNP, accompanied the students. She remarked, “I was very proud of the students’ flexibility and adaptability. It is very difficult for parents of disabled and special needs children to leave their children with ‘just anybody’ because of the child’s needs, but the students jumped right in and provided excellent care for the children, some of whom were quite challenging.” She continued to say, “Many parents thanked the students when they picked up their children at the end of the day.”

Kyle reported that she received an email from the Lenora J. Marten, president of the Florida Organization of Parents of Blind Children that praised the Herzing University student nurses for giving the children “exemplary” care. “Not only did they make our parents feel comfortable,” Marten wrote, “but the children happily spent the day with them.”

At President Marten’s personal request, the students are scheduled to assist with childcare at the Florida Organization of Parents of Blind Children Statewide conference being held at the end of May.

A big round of applause to the nursing students at our Orlando campus for giving back to their community and for helping out a great organization.
